EXCLUSIVE: New House of Commons spying scandal uncovered

DeadBrain has tonight uncovered dramatic new evidence about the spying activities of the British security services – inside the Houses of Parliament. Intelligent intelligence sources have told our security correspondent that several well-known MPs are being "closely monitored" for reasons as yet unknown. These include Michael Howard, the leader of the Opposition; the former Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook; and the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.

"A lot of MPs are being followed as they go about their business by a special group of agents," said one highly-placed source. "They come armed with audio and video surveillance equipment, which they frequently use to record conversations, interviews and speeches. These recordings are then used with other material to file reports, which are seen by senior officials."

It is believed that large numbers of these special agents, known in security service jargon as "journalists", have been monitoring the MPs for some time and most are seemingly unaware of their presence. "They often go about their business doing all sorts of embarrassing things they wouldn't want people to know about as if the thought that someone might be watching has never occurred to them," said a second source, who added that recent examples have included Boris Johnson and Jenny Tonge.

Many of the MPs we spoke to were outraged that they are being spied on. "It is frankly outrageous that Members of Parliament, elected and trusted by the people, can be spied on in this underhand way," said a senior Conservative MP, who did not wish to be named. "The Prime Minister should look into this as a matter of urgency and report back to the House why we are being bugged and who authorised it. He must put a stop to it immediately."

Another MP told us that he was "being bugged right now". He refused to elaborate.

However, a formed Cabinet minister was unsurprised by tonight's revelations. "I have known about this for a long time," she said. "Most of the Commons is being spied on in one way or another. Even I'm bugged right now. This conversation will not stay confidential – within hours someone in some office will be reading a transcript of it. It's a disgrace, but what can you do?"

A spokesman for the government said that the intelligence services always acted within the law and that any activities they may or may not be carrying out would be determined by national security needs. No "journalists" could be found for comment.
